About Me

I have always been fascinated with how learning works. All people have the capacity to learn and to keep on learning, but not all teaching methods are the right fit for everybody. I first noticed that some of my classmates and friends worked so much harder than others in school, but really struggled anyway when I was very young. I have spent most of my life trying to understand why and learning different teaching methods to add to my toolbox.

When I first heard about educational therapy, I was skeptical and intrigued. When I fully understood how becoming an educational therapist would allow me to be the kind of teacher that I always wanted to be, I jumped in with both feet!

I have an undergrad degree in the liberal arts, a master's degree in  Special Education with an emphasis in Educational Therapy, and I am a professional member of the Association of Educational Therapists. I have years of training in teaching reading, including to students with dyslexia, and I am a Certified Academic Language Practitioner.

I myself am a parent of children with learning disabilities and am a fierce advocate for the right of all people to access education. I am passionate about literacy for all and inclusive, multi-modal education.

About Sapience Educational Therapy

Sapience means wisdom, or more precisely: a being that has the capacity to obtain wisdom and knowledge. I love words and understanding what words mean! My students know that I have a tendency to get very excited, and even a little nerdy, when discussing what words mean. I chose to name my practice Sapience because it reminds me of the value of wisdom and that all human beings have the capacity to learn.

The word therapy means: to relieve or alleviate a disorder, ailment, or disability. Unlike other kinds of therapists, educational therapists use the tools of education to help people with learning challenges and processing disorders to use their strengths to overcome their weaknesses. Unlike tutors that specialize in and teach a specific subject matter, educational therapists specialize in the process of learning.

I look forward to working with your family in the future!
